Be careful -- when using the traditional /etc/passwd approach, this is
probably true because of all and every programs that think that they
need to know how to read and parse this file.

But several newer Unix'es (even as old as Ultrix) use different password
techniques when set up to use shadow passwords. And when doing that they
don't necessarily use the same algorithms as their competitors ...
