Yes.  pppd reads both (and other files) every time.

Yes, but if I have two pppd's started by root, they would be using the
same .ppprc.

Oops.  Yes.  Thanks for the idea.  But, I still can't see why ttyp1, not
the tty line I specify... ;-)
