It's not the configuring that works. Right now, I can dial up
a sportster with my modem (a high end practical peripherals) and the
connection will start at 19.2, go up through the steps to 26.4 and
stay there. Thing is, that's the *only* modem that does that with
mine. I get similarly poor performance when I use my supra.

Both the PP and the Supra work excellently with the Motorola,
Worldblazer, Microcom, Multitec, Supra and Courier modems that I
connect with every day. Both of them act funny with the Sportster,
which also occaisionally drops connections with my modems, too.

I have had the same experience with most modems (although the
PP has a display and buttons instead of dip switches) except the
Multitec (which I set up). In that case, I use the rather long init
string our router's manual recomended for multitec modems.
