Subject: SCSI tape driver broken?

Is anyone able to use the SCSI tape driver with QIC-24 tape drives?
It used to work for me, and now all tape access attempts produce:

  % mt -f /dev/nrst0 rewind # for example
  st0(si0:4:0): not ready, data = 00
  mt: /dev/nrst0: Input/output error

This happens with both an Archive Viper and with an Emulex MT02
connected to a Wangtek QIC-36 (typical in old Sun3 machines).

I suspect the problem is in the MI code, unless I hear from
people who are able to use (i.e.) an Archive Viper on a PC.

Thanks,
Gordon
