berkeley DB is, yes.
   
   Also, it is mandatory that /usr/share (and sometimes /usr too) be
   mounted read-only, esp. when shared with NFS.  Does this cause any
   problems with the likes of vi, etc.?

vi only wants to read stuff in there.  if it matters, your
vi is broken.
