daniel carosone submitted a PR related to this a long time ago
(sometime in 1994, if memory serves).  i also had thisi problem
at the time.

now it's just ssh that seems to take ages ... watching the
network, and using ssh -v doesn't really help.  it just stops
at certain times for upto 15 seconds.  it may be related....
