I would say so.  I suspect 'twas because the patches were a
quick-and-dirty hack, using system() all over the place and thus not
capable of doing real error handling.

I've got them saved in my incoming-patches file, and when I get around
to dealing with it, I intend to make it work as you say.

Unless of course someone else gets there first :-)
