It looks as though what you want is a program called 'mush'.  It
was written quite a while ago; the farthest it ever got was version
7.2.5.  It supports automatic signing in two ways, as well as the
the 's 1-5 | cmd' (although it pipes to internal commands, but
I think one can make it do external stuff).

Archie for the sources -- I forget where I got them.  ftp.uu.net
sounds about right (as crusty as the archives are).  Make sure you
get version 7.2.5.

After he finished 'mush', the author went on to create 'zmail'
(he was going to call it 'zipcode' but the Postal Service got on
his butt for trademark infringement) as a commercial product.
