It has just installed a handler for sigsegv; since it works fine without
   optimization, I can only assume we're at fault.

That's a poor assumption.  There are plenty of ways a program could
fail with optimization, but not without.  And if anything, this is a
most likely a compiler bug, which should be reported to
bug-gcc@prep.ai.mit.edu.
