Craig,

I get similar problems on my laptop where I bring the network up and down a
lot and change the routing and local addresses regularly.  I haven't spent
any time tracking this down yet, but I assume it is related to the
fluctuating network.  My workaround is to set the DISPLAY environment
variable to "<hostname>:0.0".  By default the DISPLAY variable is set to
":0.0".
