I'm to tired discussing the actual topic, but I like to state my
meta-opinion anyway.

YES, I think there is a need for something to be done.  The BSD way of
building is... hmm.. not brilliant.  Perhaps it's my ancestry, but I
think GNU software is quite a bit better on building out of the source
tree.  Many obj-trees per sourcetree (same machine, same filesystem
view) isn't really doable in our scheme, no?
