Oh, *believe* me... it *does* place files in lost+found. ;-)

I found this out the hard way when I had a drive that was slowly
dying.  I would experience random disk rot.  Every time I would
reboot, I'd have a whole pile of files and/or directories that I had
to dig out of lost+found and put back where they belonged.  It got so
bad that I started putting files in each dir named the dir name, with
the text of the dir name in them, so if the whole dir got put into
lost+found, I could quickly figure out which one it was when I put it
back.
