Subject: FS clean bit, is it reliable?

A while back, cgd mentioned that filesystems were sometimes
incorrectly marked clean on shutdown, when the syncs didn't properly
complete or something like that.

Is this still the case?  If so, maybe the `fsck' in /etc/rc should
include the -f option by default.

Apologies if this was an i386-specific issue, I honestly can't
remember.
