Because of "make depend". I agree that some cleaner solution would be
preferable, but its not that easy (and not documented at all) how to
get that (&!^@! config to produce compile rules for non .c source.
After trying on that for a while, we (me and Chris Hopps) decided to
leave it that way rather than trying to hack it under time pressure.

I promise to give a better look after -1.1.
