Is there an (expected) explanation of why I've recently noticed delays, 
sometimes as long as four hours, before bilbo.pic.net receives certain 
mail messages from pain.lcs.mit.edu?  

If the explanation is "load" at pain.lcs.mit.edu, could that be addressed 
by distributing the various lists among different servers, somehow?  Or
using a different server at mit.edu, perhaps?
