I was browsing the amd sources today, and discovered that it uses as the loopback address:

afs_ops.c: line 145 ff.
         * Create sockaddr to point to the local machine.
         * is not used since that will not work in HP-UX clusters and
         * this is no more expensive.
        bzero((voidp) &sin, sizeof(sin));

A glance at the following code indicates that the comment appears to 
be accurate.
