I'm getting these creations from,
it happens every now and again that something goes
wrong on and all these old directories
get created (last time it was creating 'gcc2 and gzip-1.0.7 ...')
Usually the problem disappears again a few days later
when someone on gets round to fixing it.

It's happened more often lately, has
also been unrealiable lately (or unreachable) also
the deletions haven't always come, the only way I
can get rid of these directories is to do a full 
list of the correct files (sup -f) and compare but
it takes ages so I can't do it too often.

There is no automatic way of fixing it.

The cost of living hasn't affected it's popularity. (unknown)
