Try setting them to something different. I know of some
VGA-cards which mess around with irq 9, and some our PC's
didn't work with 0x280. We run them all at 0x300 and irq 10 and 0xdc000
while our adaptec are at 0xd0000.
The cost of living hasn't affected it's popularity. (unknown)
