perl5.001l and Curses compiled fine.  Tried to run some demos.. but failed.

When I tried 'demo' from the Curses a8 package, I get:

ld.so: Undefined symbol "___unctrl" in perl:/usr/local/install/perl5.001l/lib/pe
rl5/auto/Curses/Curses.so

so I thought.. Gee.. it's 6:35AM and I should sleep... :)  well I thought
ldconfig could help.. nope.. included the path to Curses.so and it would
show up on ldconfig -r   list...

so I tried another script from perlmenu.v3.2 called demo.. and got..
Undefined subroutine &main::initscr called at ./demo line 30.

HELP?
