Buy a Hayes ESP card for each machine. I was able to run my 28.8k
modem at 115.2k with the serial port on a SLOOOOW Zenith 386/20 with
*no* dropped chars using the ESP. It was a lost cause with a 16550.
It will Just Work with the standard serial driver, with the Hayes
running in standard 16550-compat mode, except that it will give you a
1024-byte FIFO.
