I tried it out about a month ago, with the words "it's broken!" ringing 
in my ears.  I came to the same conclusion after about 10 minutes.  I 
could newlfs, but actually trying to use it made my machine do very 
strange things.  I felt fortunate that a power cycle left things intact. :-)
