Which, in the form of /etc/crontab, you have.

Someone did say about losing vital cron jobs if you lost /var.
So put those in /etc/crontab.  Certainly I'd have thought that
all those vital (ok, maybe they're not ;) nightly and weekly jobs
should run from there.
