   Oh, while I'm on the subject of gcc ... should I just be able to use gcc
   2.6.3 to compile other programs (with shared libraries)?

I ported the FSF code to NetBSD for i386 and m68k before 2.6.3 was
released, so in theory it should work `out of the box', but I wouldn't
place any bets on that.
