put COMPAT_43 back in your kernel.
I lost it from one of my machines after an editor accident (for some
weird reason i was using vi not emacs) and it had me stumped for a
while because I *knew* I had COMPAT_43 defined.. :-)
This is exactly the behaviour I saw.
