I have an i386 with an NE2000 card.  It produces "ring buffer overflows"
   on occasion, especially while tcpdump is running.  Sometimes, soon
   after printing ring buffer overflow messages, the machine freezes up
   so thoroughly [...]

I'm a bit tied up with other things right now, but I'll look into this
in a week or so if nobody else has gotten to it by then.
