   3) Can anyone think of a reason not to set hostname during runtime or
   multiuser state?

Some programs (including sendmail, I think) cache the value on
startup.  This may cause problems.

Also, if you have a dynamically changing host name, make sure your
mail agents strip the variable part when you send mail!
