I lack:

           sys/arch/i386/conf/files.i386

   which makes config (not config.new) impossible.

After 1.0, the i386 port no longer uses the old config(8) program.  You
should be using config.new(8).

   I'm also very confused by the sys/compat/*/syscalls.master differences
   which pretty definately don't permit ibcs2 and sysv to compile here
   [...]

The SVR4 code should now be fine, but the iBCS2 code has not yet been
updated.
