I've noticed this same behavior on:
   Ultrix 4.2
   HP-UX A.09.01

But it works on:
   Ultrix 4.3
   OSF1 v1.3

Haven't looked into it, since I use the last two almost exclusively ;)
The difference between Ultrix 4.2 and 4.3 .. anybody?
