guess you guys never installed MORE/BSD on a VAX ;-)
it was a binary only distribution of 4.2BSD...

binary only distributions do 'make depend' so fast because there is
little to no source.  what source exists is tiny.  scanning 5 small
files is fast (BSDI).  scanning hundreds of files is slow (netbsd).

it's not the os.  (I have installed both bsdi 1.1 and netbsd 1.0 recently)
