I picked up XFree86-3.1 today, and had some problems after installing it
with my keyboard locking up.  Someone else reported such problems a
while ago.

My problems went away when I fixed the xdm config file to start up the X
server on an unused console virtual terminal (I had set things up this
way for XFree86-2.1.1, but forgot to roll forward the xdm config files).

My /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers file now has as its active ingredients:

:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -terminate vt8
