Yeah, I'm sure the kernel in question's not corrupted.  I thought that 
might be it, bu then I went and tried again (with both kernels; note this 
happens with both of them) and it kept happening, exactly the same way.  
I'm just reading the new kernel in off a disk with tar, typing sync sync 
umount -a sync sync halt, and trying to boot it.

This makes no sense to me at all.
