I just wanted to follow up to let everyone know what my problem
in building the current using the May 2 source codes. It may be
helpful to others. Earlier John Booth indicated that he was having
problems building a kernel. "genassym" would hang in the compile/XXXX
directory. I had a similar problem. An additional problem was I was
able to build the "config" program, but it would hang like genassym did.
I had installed the binary tar files from ftp.iastate.edu but the problem
persisted. To make a long story short, It turned out that I had some
versioned shared libraries hanging around that got bumped up above the
binary snapshot libraires. For example libc.so.11.0 existed at /usr/lib.
The binaries from May 3 had a libc number libc.so.9.0. So once I cleaned
up my /usr/lib directory everything worked as expected.

I would like to thank all those who helped me. It was very helpful
to see your notes. I would also encourage the very few who flame
to please keep your editorial comments to yourself. It really isn't
very helpful, and I can care less about your insecurities :-)

Thanks a lot.
