Okay, I bet that'll "fix" it. I tried calling into my system awhile ago
and fiddled with the bits & parity settings on the remote end and did
manage to get logged in (I'm using seyon on the remote side). However,
in playing with the settings in seyon, there didn't seem to be _any_
combination of bits & parity that would not cause received characters
to be trashed. Maybe I'll have to fiddle with it more.

Anyways, thanks for the suggestions. I didn't think it was a parity,
etc. issue at first because the line seemed so dead after entering my
login name and also because the initial login string & prompt were
clean.
