We've seen this bug as well.  We've been looking for the problem for a
while, but i believe we are approaching closure on it.

Your fix (as you know) treats the symptom and not the cause.   Another
workaround is to set mount w/rsize/wsize=2048.

We'll look at your second fix.

Anyway, i expect the hang bug will fall soon.
