actually, it was added when uid/gid types were changed to 32 bits.
However, only the pc532 needed it, then.

You're correct in thinking that you'll only need it until you
recompile/reinstall the world.  I'd actually suggest leaving it in
unless, for some reason, you actively don't want it -- it's a bit
of insurance against future changes we might make.
