The first version was supposed to work if you ran it from a directory
that already contained copies of the relevant *.o files.  The second
version had a typo "ar r __.SYMDEF" instead of "ar d __.SYMDEF", which
escaped my notice for a long time.  Fortunatly, the script shouldn't be
needed any more.
