Based on this (and other replies I've gotten to the same effect), I'm
beginning to wonder if tar might be better for me.

Sure, tar can't guarantee that it get's the right thing either, but it
probably does a much better job on an active filesystem.

I also find it annoying that I can't (easily) dump more than one file
system on a tape.  Do I really need a separate tape for my 16 meg root
partition?
