Well, I'm not sure if my original message detailing my problems after 
updating my bootblocks, but here's an update:  I was able to boot my
system off the wd0 drive by using the -0.9 kernel floppy and specifying
wd(0,a) at the bootprompt.

I just re-did my disklabels and I'm about to try booting unassisted again.
Has anyone successfully installed the latest bootblocks on either an IDE
or SCSI drive? (revision 1.14, -current source)
