I've just committed a number of changes to the assembler that enables
handling of `.type' directives, that gcc is going to generate in the future.
These changes are necessary to eliminate some of the guesswork that's
currently being done in ld.

My current schedule is to update gcc in about a week's time. By then it'll
be *mandatory* to have the updated gas in place. The current gas will choke
on the new gcc's assembler output. This will be the case for gcc output,
not just when compiling with `-fpic'.
