It was 7, and that was too much load.
We chopped it down to 4, and that didn't let people in.
And then it was made 12 (in the last week).
Last night lamp was so floored that a kernel compile took an
hour (mind you, a very large kernel).
It's now 6.
(chris and i are laughing about this right now, since all this
happened in the last week.)

the load does not go over 1.0, yet the subjective performance
is terrible (likely because of interrupts)
With 12 max-connections, 40 disk irq's per second, and
over 100 irq/sec ethernet. Squish, squish, squish.
