Rewrite the stream multiplexing code

This supposedly provides a much more robust implementation that is
trying to address ticket #64 by recognizing the fact that a poll(2)
notification for read does not imply that read(2) will get a whole
text line.

The code reintroduces the (previously-deleted) auxiliary abstract
class to allow unit testing.

This is still unused.
