 The Makefile.am.m4 file is huge.  It would be nice to have one Makefile
 per directory, but I don't like make recursion because then, the project
 doesn't have a global view of all dependencies.

 The idea is to split the Makefile into pieces (one Makefile.am.inc per
 directory) and make the top-level Makefile pull all of them in by
 includes.

 While doing this, probably kill m4 altogether.  It just sucks.
