It does that for all scsi tapes. In the kernel (src/sys/scsi/st.c) it
always reports type 7:

I hacked mt a bit. I sent it in with send-pr but nobody has apparently
done something with it. I'll include it below. It also adds
mt density and mt blocksize. mt erase does not work since the kernel
does not support it, but that can relatively easy be stolen from FreeBSD.
