 The ECS Console only knows about 7Bit ASCII, X11 thought of course
does under stand ISO-8859-1 and -7. CSLip however should transport 8Bit, hence
all of the above (and more :-). 

 You should clarify where you are expecting ASCII or Latin-1 chars.
