I've been trying to compile the Xlibs, but I keep getting
strange error messages.

Here is part of it:

including in ./config
[: .././X11: binary operator expected

blablabla

ln -s ../ .. /./config/imakemdep.h .
         ^ ^
these spaces should not be here

ln: ./ is a directory
ln: ./.. file exists

Here is what I did:

I edited the Imake.tmpl according to the RELNOTES.TXT file that
comes with X11R5, so that the netbsd*.* files are used.

Could it be that somehow somewhere something goes wrong when the makefile(s)
are created ? Maybe too many spaces are introduced ?

I'm stills running the 720 binaries, maybe that's the problem ??
