I just found that config.new has the annoying habit of putting a file in 
your Makefile if it you have defined *any* of the subsystems it is 
assigned to in *.newconfig.  This means that if you define `ite' but not 
`grfrt0' or `grfrth0' in your config file, you still get ite_rt.c and 
ite_rh.c in your makefile and in your kernel.  But you don't get 
grf_rh.c in your makefile, so the kernel worn't link.  Grr...
