No, that does not work (see previous explanation):
i386 -> x86 -> sys

You can't have both i386 and x86 be _MACHINE.

Erk... Is there a sane _ANSI_   _MACHINE_ANSI_   _MACHINE_ARCH_ANSI_ pattern somewhere or is that trying to force it...
