it strikes me that when cross-compiling *to* some platforms, a couple
more things need to be added to the "toolchain":

elf2ecoff - for cross compiling to pmax
dbsym - for cross compiling to evbarm

without these, kernels can't be built properly, although i imagine
most other things work fine.
