``Sort of''.  For the time being, a stated constraint of java packages
in pkgsrc is that they support both the older JDK-1.1 and newer JDK
versions.  Several of the apache.org packages cannot currently be
_built_ under JDK-1.1, but run fine there (the incompatibilities are in
helper code used during the build process).

When we have a native JDK of a more recent vintage, this problem (and
the installation of these packages from binary distributions) should go
away, allowing the type of local customization (compiler used,
optimization options, etc) which come with a source-based pkg install.
