I'll use Ultrix as an example...

Perhaps you don't have any working Ultrix install media, or hard drives, etc.  But you happen to have that commercial application that you still have the occasion to use on its original CD-ROM.  Because Ultrix binaries are statically-linked, you don't need any bits from Ultrix to run them.  Why not be able to run them on a system that doesn't have y2k bugs?

As for OSF/1, yes, you're better off running commercial software for OSF/1 on OSF/1, because our OSF/1 implementation is incomplete, and so the application likely will not work, especially if it uses threads.
